A former Iowa State football player has pleaded not guilty to charges that he assaulted current Iowa basketball player Jordan Bohannon on the Ped Mall.

29-year-old Nicholas Kron of Nashville, TN entered the plea Friday in Johnson County court.

According to arrest records, Kron and Bohannon were arguing outside DC’s on South Dubuque Street after bar close on May 23rd when Kron allegedly sucker-punched Bohannon three times in the back of the head, knocking him down and causing a cut. Bohannon was removed from the scene by three friends and taken to a local hospital for treatment of what school officials would later call a “serious head injury”.

Video of the incident shows Bohannon was turned away from Kron at the time the punches were thrown. The Associated Press reports Bohannon has since filed a lawsuit against Kron, saying he was “brutally, unlawfully and intentionally” assaulted.

Kron is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail. He played defensive end for Iowa State in 2012 and 2013.

On Friday Judge Jason Burns set a case management conference for December 6th.
