House and Senate Republicans Reach Budget Agreement for Fiscal Year 2026

On Thursday, the Iowa House and Senate Republicans reached an agreement on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

The total spending for FY 2026 is $9.425 billion. The agreed-upon budget target is an increase of $478.1 million over the current year’s spending level of $8.947 billion.  This amount is an increase of 5.34 percent over Fiscal Year 2025.

This budget agreement also includes a number of priorities funded through the Sports Wagering Fund, including $14 million for Paraeducator Pay;  $5 million for Special Education Divisoin in the Iowa Department of Education; $8 million for the Public Safety Equipment Fund; and $1.5 million for the Length of Service Awards Program designed to offer financial rewards to volunteer firefighters for their years of service.

Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee Gary Mohr said in a release that budget subcommittee chairs are hard at work with their Senate counterparts hammering out the final details.

The House is expected to begin moving appropriations bills through the committee process today.
