An Iowa City man who pleaded guilty for his part in a fatal drag racing accident has been arrested on a new traffic charge.

19-year-old Elijah Seals of East Market Street was arrested Wednesday afternoon. Iowa City Police say Seals was seen driving a 1993 Chevy K1500 on Wade Street near Wayne Avenue just after 4:30 despite having a revoked license. He reportedly fled the traffic stop on foot, but was arrested when he returned to claim his vehicle.

Seals is charged with Driving While Revoked and Driving While Suspended. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.

The driving restrictions were handed down to Seals last December after he entered an Alford plea to one count of Vehicular Homicide. Seals was one of two teens who were drag racing down Court Street near City High School in May of 2023 when they struck a third vehicle being driven by 22-year-old Jennifer Russell of Waterloo, who later died from her injuries at University of Iowa Health Care. The other driver, 19-year-old Kesean Ford of Iowa City, is due to be sentenced in the case on Monday.
