Iowa City man accused of passing bad checks at grocery store

An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly passing three bad personal checks earlier this year.

According to police, 56-year-old Jeffrey Chapman of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street wrote two of the checks at New Pioneer Co-Op on South Van Buren Street  February 23rd, and another on the 25th.  The total of the three checks totaled nearly $600.

A warrant was issued on May 20th; Chapman was taken into custody Thursday morning.  He faces a charge of 4th degree theft and could be sentenced to up to a year in jail if convicted.
