Leaders of the Iowa Democratic and Republican parties are blaming low economic growth scores in the state on each other.

A newly released report from WalletHub put Iowa dead last among the states and Washington DC in overall economy, 51st in new startup activity and 50th in change among nonfarm payrolls.

A release from the Iowa Democratic Party also pointed out that a Bureau of Economic Analysis report earlier this year ranked Iowa 49th in economic growth in 2024 and 48th in personal income growth.

IDP Chair Rita Hart said in the release, “This is just more proof of what Iowans already know – whether they are already struggling because of layoffs in our manufacturing sector, tariffs that are driving up costs and destroying markets for Iowa farmers, or rural hospitals that are on the brink of closing due to Medicaid cuts, Iowa needs a change of leadership. The path we have been going down under Republican control is clearly not working for our state.”

Iowa Republican Party chair Jeff Kaufmann said in a statement that the WalletHub report is based on data from 2023-2024, and “reveals what Iowans already know; former president Joe Biden tanked our economy.”

Kaufmann added, “With a focus on woke climate policies like the Green New Deal, hindering American energy production through endless red tape, and unchecked federal spending that resulted in record inflation, it’s not a surprise that we’re digging out of a hole Joe Biden made.”   He said the Trump administration will make America great again by undoing Biden’s “terrible policies.”
