The North Liberty City Council is considering putting up a local option sales tax to vote this November.

State law requires half of the revenue from the proposed 1 percent tax to go to property tax relief, with the rest to be used at the city’s discretion.

The Gazette reports the proposed language outlining uses for the remaining half would read, “for capital projects, including but not limited to, a fire station, fire apparatus & equipment, community center upgrades, parks, trails, streets and related infrastructure, equipment and other projects identified in the City’s Capital Improvements Plan; and for programs and initiatives that increase housing supply and access, including, but not limited to, affordable housing funding, workforce housing gap support, neighborhood reinvestment projects that may include infrastructure improvements, home improvement/renovation grants, rental rehabilitation, and other housing projects designated by City Council.”’

Council members say they would like to move forward,  while some indicated they’d like to condense the proposed language.

The council will vote later this summer on a resolution to put the tax on the ballot for the November election. If passed by a simple majority, they would join Swisher, Solon, Lone Tree, Hills, Tiffin and University Heights as cities in Johnson County that have the tax. Iowa City has also indicated they will put a local option sales tax initiative up for vote this November.
