Iowa City Police have arrested an alleged bicycle thief they say they caught riding the stolen bike on video.
The $2,500 bicycle was reported stolen from a business on the 1500 block of South Gilbert Street just before 3:30 Tuesday afternoon. A witness reported seeing the suspect riding the bike eastbound down Waterfront Drive. Video obtained from the nearby Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh reportedly shows the suspect, 35-year-old Zarkee Hall, riding the bike past the convenience store.
A co-defendant gave investigators Hall’s name, and contact was made at Hall’s South Linn Street apartment. He was arrested on an active warrant, and police say the bicycle was found under a tarp. Hall was wanted for failing to appear at a May arraignment on previous theft and drug charges. He now faces an added charge of 2nd Degree Theft. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
