A juvenile convicted of a stabbing at West High last year has now been arrested as a suspect in an Iowa City shooting that injured four people earlier this month.
Iowa City Police say 17-year-old Moayed Elsid of Westgate Street is charged with Attempted Murder and Possession of a Firearm as a Felon. Arrest records indicate Elsid and a second juvenile were involved in an altercation in the parking lot of 618 East Court Street just before 3:00 on the morning of August 3rd when Elsid allegedly shot a woman in the stomach. That person was transported to a local hospital. A short time later, three other shooting victims were admitted to various area medical facilities.
Witnesses say both Elsid and the other juvenile shot at the original victim. One of them reportedly said, “We gonna blow this bitch” before the shots were fired.
Elsid was developed as a suspect through cellphone data, video from the scene, and witness accounts. His phone allegedly contained a photo of him holding a firearm prior to the shooting. Police say Elsid and his reported accomplice have been involved in a dispute with the woman’s juvenile son, who has been stabbed twice in the last year as a result. One of those stabbings led to felony charges against Elsid and then-17-year-old Tion Exum of Coralville, who both pleaded guilty to felony burglary charges.
The alleged accomplice in the Court Street shooting was charged with Possession of a Firearm as a Felon, although police have not released his identity due to his being a juvenile and the charge against him not being a forcible felony.
If convicted, Elsid faces a maximum of 30 years in prison.
