The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is addressing last week’s school lockdowns in the county.
A news release says deputies were contacted last Friday by Wells Fargo Bank Security services regarding a threat that was made by a customer over the phone in which they stated they would shoot up a school or a church service.
Columbus Junction Police and the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Louisa County address of the caller, but the subject was not located. Further phone communications failed when attempting to locate and speak with the individual.
Because law enforcement could not locate the subject, Columbus Junction, Louisa-Muscatine, Wapello, and Morning Sun schools were all placed in lockdown, and several churches were warned as well. Deputies and Iowa DNR officers arrived at each individual school for perimeter security.
The suspect was eventually determined to be in North Carolina, and the lockdowns were cancelled.
Upon returning to Iowa on Saturday, the individual was taken into custody and a mental health commitment was initiated. Firearms were located and kept for safekeeping.
