The shutdown of the federal government has put the special census for the city of Tiffin on hold.
The city announced on its Facebook page that the U.S. Census Bureau website is currently offline. Once the government shutdown has ended, residents can again fill out their online census surveys.
Residents who have received mailings from the federal government are asked to hold on to them until the shutdown is over. They can then enter the pertinent information into the web site.
The Tiffin area has seen a rise in population, doubling between 2010 and 2020 to about 4,000 people. Based on the city’s Utilities Department current count of how many households have water meters, the city believes its population has nearly doubled again to around 7,000 residents.
The special census can result in a significant increase in federal and state dollars for roads and other city improvements.
The City of North Liberty held a special census in 2015 due to a population boom. It resulted in about $1.4 million in additional revenue for the city over the ensuing five years.
