Elderly man perishes in overnight Fairfax fire

An elderly man died in a fire that occurred overnight Sunday in Fairfax.

According to a release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, multiple law enforcement and fire department agencies responded to a report of a house fire on Olson Court at 2.24am.

Responders arrived to find the house fully engulfed and a report of an elderly man who was unable to escape the blaze.  The homeowners, identified as David and Nancy Olson, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, then transported to University of Iowa Health Care.  Two other occupants were able to escape unharmed.

Firefighters were able to locate the deceased victim; his name is being withheld at this time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
