An Iowa City man with a lengthy criminal history could spend up to a decade in prison if convicted on a new burglary charge.

Iowa City Police say 33-year-old Gregory Echols of the 501 Apartments on Southgate Avenue stole two cellphones and a set of headphones from another apartment in his building when the resident left her door unlocked. The incident reportedly occurred while the woman was sleeping between 10:00 on the night of September 25th and 2:00 the next morning.

A check of security video allegedly shows Echols entering the woman’s apartment twice during the reported timeframe. Police say when confronted, Echols admitted to entering the woman’s apartment and produced two of the stolen items.

Echols is charged with 2nd Degree Burglary. If convicted, he faces a maximum of ten years in prison.

Echols has a lengthy history of previous theft and burglary convictions.
