The man who was charged last year for interfering with a police investigation into a frat hazing has had those charges dismissed.
The Press-Citizen reports 22-year-old Joseph Gaya was charged with interference with official acts in November 2024 when first responders visited the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity because of a fire alarm. Authorities found 56 pledges blindfolded, shirtless and “with food thrown on them.” Gaya was charged a simple misdemeanor for allegedly refusing to leave the premises.
Gaya’s attorney motioned for a judgement of acquittal shortly after a jury was selected in his case. On Novenber 5th, the case was dismissed. The attorney, Daniel Vondra, said the case never should have gone to trial because there was a lack of evidence to convict his client.
The fraternity in question, Alpha Delta Phi, was suspended by the University of Iowa through at least June 2029. In January of this year, the fraternity’s internal investigation into the matter concluded that two members of the frat coordinated the alleged hazing, but the university believed otherwise.
