University of Iowa Health Care has agreed to a multi-million dollar settlement with the family of an infant who suffered severe brain damage following a prolonged labor at the UI Hospitals and Clinics.

The Gazette reports while UI Health Care denied negligence in the infant’s case, officials cited the severity of the injuries and uncertainty of a jury trial as reasons for the $3.5 million settlement.

The agreement follows a separate $4.2 million settlement approved last month involving a man who sustained permanent brain injuries while restrained in a UIHC emergency room in 2022.

The funds do not come from Iowa’s general fund due to a self-insurance agreement renegotiated in 2023.
