An Iowa City woman has been arrested on warrants stemming from incidents involving her ex-boyfriend.
The first incident reportedly occurred at the man’s College Street apartment. According to the police report, he woke up the evening of January 31st 2025 and found the word “WHORE” painted on his door. As part of an investigation, a search warrant was executed on the phone of 19-year-old Shamya Hampton of South Johnson Street. A conversation was allegedly found between her and a friend talking about painting his door. The phone’s Google search history found a reference to getting spray paint out of a wood door. Another conversation reportedly showed Hampton told a friend in a voice text about painting the door and lying to police about it. Damage was estimated between $200 and $300.
It was also discovered that Hampton also called the victim six times, in violation of a harassment warning issued January 29th of that year.
Hampton was also accused of setting up a Grindr account in the victim’s name, using his information without his permission. On February 1 2025, he was contacted by another man who matched with him on the service, and reportedly discovered profile pictures that were unique to his time with Hampton.
Warrants were issued March 26th 2025; Hampton remained at large until she was served Monday. She now faces charges of 5th degree Criminal Mischief, 3rd degree Harassment, and Identity Theft. If convicted on all counts, Hampton could be sentenced to a maximum 26 months in jail.
She was released on her own recognizance pending arraignment.
