A Cedar Rapids man was arrested earlier this week after an alleged assault on his intimate partner.
According to police, 38-year-old Wesley Grigoleit of 21st Avenue SW was at a Coralville apartment at 11:10pm Sunday when he allegedly struck the woman in the face with a closed fist, threw her to the ground, put one hand on her neck and the other on her mouth to impede airflow.
When the victim attempted to call 911, Grigoleit reportedly grabbed the phone and left the scene.
Shortly before 1am Monday, Grigoleit was spotted by Coralville police near the scene of the alleged crime. He reportedly fled on foot despite being told to stop numerous times. Grigoleit continued to flee the officer, covering a considerable distance into a wooded marsh area.
Grigoleit avoided capture until Monday night, when he was booked into the Johnson County Jail. He’s charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense, obstruction of emergency communications, and interference with official acts. If convicted on the charges, Grigoleit could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
