An Iowa City man faces up to 25 years in prison after allegedly picking up a package at the city’s Post Office containing methamphetamine.

According to the arrest report, the Post office intercepted the package, which came from California, on April 13th. The package was sent to a guest at the Travel Lodge Hotel on North Dodge Street.

US Postal Officers took possession of the package and obtained a warrant for a K9 to inspect the package, and the canine alerted positive to drugs. The package was opened, and approximately six pounds of meth was reportedly discovered.

On Friday, officers participated in a controlled pick-up of the package. A pickup slip was left at the front desk of the Travel Lodge for the recipient. At approximately 2pm, two men walked into the Post Office with the pickup slip. They were later identified as Jose Antonio Oliverlo Parra, and Jorge Lopez of North Dodge Street. Lopez was handed the package because he produced the pickup slip.

Lopez was arrested outside the post office, and officers observed his phone getting messages from the sender of the package.

Lopez was charged with a Class B Controlled Substance violation, punishable by a maximum prison sentence of up to 25 years if convicted.
