IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team defeated Indiana, 4-2, in Sunday’s series finale at Bob Pearl Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes struck first, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Devin Simon singled and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Tory Bennett doubled to bring Simon home, and Leah McAnally followed with a single to score Bennett. McAnally later advanced to third before being replaced by pinch runner Logan Currie, who scored on a Nailyn Marshall single to give Iowa an early 3-0 advantage.
The Hoosiers answered with a solo home run in the fourth inning to get on the board.
Iowa added another run in the fifth to extend its lead to 4-1. Bennett moved into scoring position on a throwing error and scored on a single to right-center field by Myers.
Indiana hit another solo home run in the seventh, but Avery Sapp closed the door, retiring the next two batters to secure the victory.
Braylen Conlon started in the circle and pitched five innings, allowing one run while striking out two.
“We played a hard-fought game. It is mentally, emotionally and physically taxing to come back on a Sunday, and I think it speaks to the resilience of this team. The pitching today was really clean. Conlon didn’t give up a barrel for most of the game, and then Sapp came in and shut it down. We’re looking forward to these upcoming midweek games because it’ll give us an opportunity to get back out there and do it again.”
NOTABLES
- Sapp earned her second save of the season.
- Marshall and Myers each recorded multi-hit games with an RBI.
- Serayah Niess is 13 strikeouts away from 400 for her career.
