The Iowa City Community School District is considering selling the former district headquarters building on North Dodge Street to the City of Iowa City.

The Gazette reports the District is asking $3.2 million for the property. Chief Operations Director for the District, Curt Pratt, said the price was based on a 2023 appraisal of the property at $2.97 million, plus a 9 percent premium based on commercial property value increases in the area since that appraisal.

In 2022, the District purchased its current property on Dubuque Road for $8.7 million. One district board member, Jayne Finch, suggested that in wake of their current financial crisis, the District should consider selling the current building instead. She called her vote in favor of the purchase “the biggest regret I have of my tenure.”

District officials just recently learned that revenues and expenditures were not being accurately tracked for about three years, leading to a shortfall.

A public hearing on the proposed sale will be held at 6 p.m. April 28 at the district’s current headquarters.
