The University of Iowa is cutting two long-time programs due to low interest.
The Press-Citizen reports citing declining enrollment and concern over long-term sustainability, the University got approval from the Board of Regents to close two departments in the Liberal Arts College-African American Studies, and Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies.
The University said the master’s program in African American Studies was terminated because no students had enrolled in the program in the last five years.
The U of I is also eliminating bachelor degree programs in applied physics, Italian, and Russian.
Faculty and staff in the terminated programs will not be laid off, and students currently enrolled in the canceled programs will be allowed to complete their degrees.
