West Liberty’s fire department is asking for the public’s help in replacing a longtime ambulance that has been rendered unrepairable.

FIre Chief Kirt Sickels said the department is now down to just one ambulance, which leaves them with a serious safety crisis.

In a Facebook post, Chief Sickels said the loss of a 2nd ambulance in service means the department doesn’t have the resources to respond to a secondary call, pointing out that this year they’ve had more dual calls than any year before.

The city has ordered a new ambulance, but the turnaround time is well over a year.

Chief Sickels is looking at purchasing a used ambulance to tide them over, and is asking for the public to help subsidize the $40,000 to $60,000 cost.
