Car troubles came at the wrong time on Interstate 380 early Thursday morning, leading to drug charges against a pair of travelers.

A North Liberty Police officer stopped to help a disabled motorist on the on-ramp from I-380 to Penn Street just before 1am Thursday. 39-year-old Travis Mayes of Cedar Rapids was seen behind the car with a spare tire.

A check of the car’s license plate showed the female owner had a warrant out for her arrest, and further investigation determined Mayes also had a warrant out of Linn County. Mayes admitted to having marijuana in his possession, and a baggie of marijuana and a pipe with residue were found on his person. A search of the vehicle turned up another baggie of marijuana, a baggie of methamphetamine and a glass meth pipe.

Mayes and another passenger in the vehicle, 30-year-old Leslie Stewart of Springville, were both arrested. Mays is charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and one count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.

Stewart is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and faces up to 13 months behind bars, if convicted.
