A Des Moines man has been arrested after allegedly driving while impaired through Coralville with a gun in his car.

Coralville Police pulled over 28-year-old Deonta Evans as he was driving eastbound on Interstate 80 near the Coral Ridge exit just before 1:15 Tuesday morning. Evans was allegedly driving with no taillights.

Investigators say the inside of the vehicle smelled like burnt marijuana, and Evans showed signs of smoking marijuana. He also allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana prior to driving.

A search of Evans’ vehicle turned up a Taurus 9mm handgun between the driver’s seat and the center console.

Evans was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Carrying Weapons While Intoxicated and Driving While Suspended. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of three years in prison.
