An Iowa City man is accused of physically forcing a woman to look at him while he spoke during a domestic assault on Saturday.

Police were called to a Boston Way apartment in Coralville about 7 p.m. Saturday on a report of an assault. There, the victim said Keith Raney, 28, who lives on East Washington Street in Iowa City, shoved her to the ground during an argument.

Once on the ground, police say Raney forced the woman to look him in the eyes while he was yelling at her, with the victim saying if she didn’t look at him, he would physically move her head to force her to look at him.

Police say the victim told them she tried to leave during the assault but Raney wouldn’t let her, and he’s accused of taking her phone from her so she could not call 911. He also allegedly threatened to kill her if she called police.

The woman suffered scratches to her face, forehead, and shoulder and Raney is accused of pulling her hair.

Raney told KCJJ that while he was not “100% innocent”, he was upset because his ex refused to let him see his son and she was sleeping with his brother.

Raney is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Without Intent Causing Injury, 1st Degree Harassment, False Imprisonment, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to four years in jail.
