Allegedly starting a fire inside his girlfriend’s apartment during a domestic dispute has led to an Illinois man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police say 26-year-old Teyvious Montgomery of Rockford had been fighting with his girlfriend at RISE at Riverfront Crossings on South Linn Street around 4:45 Friday afternoon when he used a candle to light paper material on fire in the living room, next to a couch and wooden end table. The smell of the burning paper alarmed the girlfriend, who opened her bedroom door. Montgomery then allegedly rushed into the bedroom and cornered her, confining her inside until police arrived.

Officers were dispatched to the residence when neighbors said they heard pounding and a woman calling for help. In addition to lighting the fire, Montgomery had also allegedly damaged the bedroom door and thrown the woman’s clothing into the shower.

Montgomery was allegedly uncooperative during the investigation, refused to identify himself and was verbally abusive toward officers. He was arrested and charged with Reckless Use of Fire, Domestic Abuse Assault – 2nd Offense and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 25 months in prison.
