A University of Iowa student arrested on drug charges allegedly told police she sold marijuana out of her car instead of her home out of respect for her roommates.

19-year-old Danielle Reyes of the Hawks Ridge Apartments was pulled over near the corner of Gilbert and Market Streets just after 12:15 Wednesday morning after Iowa City Police noticed her driving on a completely flat tire. Investigators say the inside of the vehicle smelled of raw marijuana, and a passenger admitted that there was marijuana inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle turned up a Ziplock baggie containing approximately six ounces of marijuana, 7.2 grams of marijuana wax, a digital scale and money in small denominations inside Reyes’ purse. Police say Reyes admitted to selling marijuana to help her pay rent. She allegedly added that she stores and sells marijuana from her car instead of her residence “out of respect” for her roommates.

Reyes is charged with Keeping or Permitting Use of a Controlled Substance in a Structure or Vehicle, a Controlled Substance Violation and a Drug Tax Stamp Violation. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 12 years in prison.
