Officials at the Iowa City Community School District say the number of free “grab and go” bags of food for students being distributed has increased five-fold since the first day, and is likely to increase as the days progress.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen says the district served 631 students on March 23rd. Five Mondays later, they gave out about 3500 bags at its various pickup locations.
The district saw an increase after the USDA lifted its requirement that the students actually be present to receive food for them. And as more and more people become unemployed, the district anticipates more people taking advantage of the service.
During a regular school day, the district feeds about 4000 students using the free or reduced-price program. Meals can be picked up between 11am and 1pm weekdays.
