An unknown number of residents were displaced after a large apartment fire in Cedar Rapids.
According to a release from the city of Cedar Rapids, the CRFD was called to 3235 Pioneer Ave SE just before 10:15 Sunday night for a report of smoke and flames coming from a third story apartment.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a third story apartment and the roof. Multiple lines were used to knock the fire down, and a search of the structure began for tenants. The fire was quickly brought under control, and all occupants were accounted for.
The apartment of origin sustained severe damage, and the building was shut down for the night. The total number of displaced occupants was unknown, although the Red Cross provided shelter for six of the occupants. The building has 16 total units.
An investigation determined that the occupants of the involved apartment had been grilling on the deck a couple hours before the fire, and residual grilling materials contributed to the blaze.
