An allegedly intoxicated driver is accused of pulling up behind a stopped Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy involved in a separate traffic stop east of Iowa City and asking if he was okay, leading to his arrest.

The deputy in question had pulled over another vehicle on Highway 6 East at Utah Avenue, near Kinderfarm, just before 11:30 Saturday night. About 20 minutes into the traffic stop a 2012 Buick Enclave pulled up behind the patrol car, which still had its top lights activated. The driver then got out and stood at his door. The deputy walked back to meet the subject, identified as 25-year-old Caleb Franzenburg of Nodaway Drive in Center Point, who allegedly asked the officer if he was okay. Franzenburg allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication.

The deputy reports that Franzenburg admitted to being lost and to drinking prior to driving. He allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol level of .194%.

Franzenburg was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
