The suspect in an assault with injury at the Old Capitol Town Center has been sentenced to less than 100 hours in jail.

That was the sentence handed down last month by Judge Brandon Schrock in the case of 58-year-old transient David Murray.

Iowa City Police say on the morning of January 20th, 2025 Murray attacked another man who was already being assaulted by 53-year-old Shelter House resident Charles Henderson.
Investigators say the victim was on the ground after Henderson put him in a headlock and punched him in the face.  That’s when Murray allegedly kicked the man in the head. Murray reportedly told police he was a passerby and decided to attack the man after Henderson had attacked him because he knew the victim had previously been accused of sexual assault.

Both Murray and Henderson were charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury. Henderson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of Disorderly Conduct in February of 2025 and was sentenced to one day in jail.

In addition to four days in jail, Murray was also fined $430.
