The Iowa City Community School District may need to renege on a promise of $14 million to the new Coralville Rec Center.
The Gazette reports Superintendent Matt Degner planned to talk with Coralville city leaders this week to see if they would consider alternate plans, including reducing the size of the proposed 20-lane competition pool.
That $14 million pledge is about 90 percent of the cost to build, and the school district would be primary users of that pool.
School board members say the district may be unable to sustain a swim program at West and Liberty high schools without the competition pool.
At Tuesday’s City Council Meeting, Coralville City Administrator Kelly Hayworth said the new Rec Center project will go on regardless, but may not include the competition pool.
