Shelter House, in their attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus, is practicing social distance. And because the need for their services haven’t changed, the city of Iowa City has accessed emergency housing money to move some patrons into hotel rooms.
Executive Director Crissy Canganelli said they’ve housed about 85 people at the facility on Southgate Avenue prior to March 16th, but tells the Press-Citizen that that number dropped to about 55 on Monday.
The emergency housing money paid for hotel rooms for those who showed signs of illness, and can pay for up to 15 rooms for up to 30 days. The hotel being used is not being made public for privacy reasons.
The paper says that the city is coordinating with Community Crisis Services and Food Bank to provide security deposit monies to secure housing for people at shelters.
