A Cedar Rapids man faces possible jail time after he hit a ticket booth in a downtown Iowa City parking ramp.

According to the police report, 20-year-old Darvell Smith of Elmhurst Drive NE was heard and observed by officers running into the ticket booth and the yellow cement bollard while attempting to exit the Capitol Street parking ramp Friday just before 3am.  He then allegedly drove off with no attempt to stop and wait or to call law enforcement.

Smith headed east on Burlington Street and reportedly was swerving from the center line to the white dotted line, and police pulled him over. Smith allegedly almost drove up over the curb when he first started to pull over, and when he did, he pulled over on the wrong side of the street.

Smith showed measurable signs of impairment on field tests; he refused further testing. Officers found a fictitious Illinois license on his person, and he reportedly admitted that it was a fake.

Smith was charged with OWI first offense, possession of a fictitious ID, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to two years in jail.
