The University of Iowa has announced upcoming renovations to Quad Green.

Quad Green is the space between the College of Pharmacy Building and Hillcrest Residence Hall, which UI officials want to turn into an area for relaxation and recreation including a pavilion with outdoor furniture, two pickleball courts, a basketball court, and new sidewalks.

The project also honors the history of the site. Quad Green is named for Quadrangle Residence Hall, which occupied the space from 1918 to 2016. The residence hall was razed in 2016 to make way for the College of Pharmacy Building, completed in 2019. Because the College of Pharmacy Building took up only part of the residence hall’s footprint, Quad Green is what remains of the original courtyard. The original iron gates from the residence hall are being restored and will be reinstalled in the space.

Another piece of history remains rooted in place at Quad Green: an American hackberry tree estimated to be more than 100 years old. Renovations were carefully planned to preserve the tree so it can continue to thrive for years to come.

Renovations are expected to be complete in October.  A photo gallery of artist renderings of the finished project can be found here.
