An Iowa City woman stopped for speeding faces additional charges after allegedly telling officers that she was her sister.
35-year-old Megan Smith of East Court Street was pulled over for speeding the morning of April 16th. She provided an ID card to officers with a different name. Smith allegedly told officers that her driver’s license was valid but she left it in her vehicle and was driving her twin sister’s vehicle because her boyfriend was helping her sell it to a friend.
Police didn’t believe Smith’s story and officers called her sister, who allegedly lied to the officers about her identity.
Smith was told by officers that she would be charged with malicious prosecution if they found out she gave them a fake name, but she allegedly acted angry that they kept questioning her about her identity.
When she signed the speeding citation with her sister’s name, it didn’t match the signature on the ID. Smith explained that she never signs her name the same .
After the traffic stop, officers went to Smith’s sister’s workplace, where she told them she was put on the spot and lied to officers.
Megan Smith was charged with Malicious Prosecution, a serious misdemeanor.
