Iowa City Police say a drunk driving suspect from Cedar Rapids nearly ran down several pedestrians near downtown overnight.
Officers were on foot patrol near the intersection of Gilbert and Burlington Streets just before 2:00 Sunday morning when they say they observed a speeding southbound 2015 Dodge Ram accelerate as it almost struck several people walking nearby. The speed was estimated at 45 miles per hour.
Officers followed the vehicle and claim they saw it cross the center line and swerve within its lane multiple times. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver…21-year-old Davonte Daum of D Avenue NE…allegedly showed signs of intoxication. His breath alcohol level was measured at .244%.
Daum was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Careless Driving.
